Advantages of Different Types of Electrical Outlets

The electrical outlets in homes may look more or less the same, but there’s usually more to them than meets the eye. Different kinds of outlets have different uses; modern electrical codes require that certain types be installed in certain areas.

So when homeowners go to replace an old outlet that’s stopped working or want to upgrade their electrical system in anticipation of a new family member, it’s important to understand each type of outlet and what it’s used for. This article will describe three of the most common types of household outlets and their differences.

AFCI Outlets Explained

outletThe AFCI outlet is the most widely found type of outlet in today’s homes. AFCI stands for “arc-fault circuit interruption.” An arc fault is when an electric current jumps a gap between two conductive materials, such as from one damaged wire to another or from a loose contact terminal inside an outlet to the prong of a plug.

Arc faults, basically small electric sparks, can cause electrical equipment to heat up or even ignite flammable materials like wood and insulation. An arc fault of some kind causes most electrical fires.

AFCI outlets – or, more accurately, the AFCI circuit breakers they connect to – detect arc faults and shut off power to the circuit when they occur. This can help prevent arc faults from igniting fires or getting so hot they damage appliances or electrical components. As such, today’s codes dictate that most outlets have AFCI protection. So, if the home still has standard outlets, homeowners should consider replacing them with AFCI outlets as soon as possible.

GFCI Outlets Explained

outletWhere AFCI outlets are all about fire prevention, GFCI outlets are designed to prevent electric shocks. As the name suggests, GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlets shut off power to a circuit when a ground fault occurs. A ground fault is when an electric current jumps out of a circuit and takes a path other than the grounding wire to get to the earth, where all electricity wants to travel.

Water is one highly conductive substance, so GFCI outlets are required anywhere that water fixtures are installed, such as kitchens and bathrooms. Outlets in garages, unfinished basements, and outdoors are also required to have GFCI protection in case they get wet from rain or snow.

If electricity is conducted through water or some other conductive material to a person’s body, the GFCI will detect the change in current and shut off power to the circuit in a fraction of a second. This can save lives and prevent serious injury from electric shock. That’s why every home should have GFCI outlets wherever there’s a chance of contact with moisture – and existing GFCIs should be tested regularly to ensure that they’re working properly.

Understanding Childproof Outlets

For those homeowners with young children (or those expecting them), it’s probably a good idea to install childproof outlets in areas that don’t already require GFCI outlets. Often referred to as tamper-resistant outlets, these have spring-loaded plastic shutters inside the contact openings (where the prongs of a power cord plug into the outlet). These shutters will only open if two prongs are inserted simultaneously, making it difficult for a young tyke to insert a paper clip or other small object into the outlet.

Tamper-resistant outlets can prevent curious youngsters from getting injured by electric shocks while being convenient and easy to use for adults. Some tamper-resistant outlets can also be installed on AFCI-protected circuits to ensure homeowners have all their bases covered. Childproof outlets are also good for those with visiting grandchildren and may even help sweeten the deal when it comes time to sell the home.

And if in doubt, homeowners would be wise to consult their trusted local electrician to determine if they need outlet installation in their home!
